LASER VISION CORRECTION
Most people with vision correction issues are wanting to know more about LASIK and whether it is right for them. Here is a brief description of the procedure;
A flap is surgically cut in the cornea and gently folded back. An Excimer Laser is used to reshape the cornea into a flatter shape (this is much like a contact lens corrects vision by forming a new shape on the cornea). The flap is then put back in place, acting like a natural bandage. The healing process is quick and the discomfort level is quite low.
People will often say that they did not feel anything, and could see well the very first day. Most people have improved vision in 24-48 hours. but it must be noted that each person will heal at a different rate. Vision, although greatly improved immediately after surgery, often continues to improve for some weeks, even months.
LASIK is not for everyone. People's eyes are different so even though you may have had a friend who has had LASIK, it may not be the best course of treatment for you. If you are interested in laser vision correction, we will be happy to guide you in picking the right surgeon, procedure and laser appropriate for you.
After the procedure, we take great care to monitor your eyes and adjust your medication for the best possible results.

EYE DISEASES; CATARACTS, GLAUCOMA, DIABETES
EARLY DETECTION of GLAUCOMA with the GDxVCC
St. Johns Eye Associates proudly offers the most advanced glaucoma detection technology available, the GDxVCC.
Glaucoma is a disease that affects 67 million worldwide. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead to blindness. Because it has no symptoms and causes no pain, many people are unaware they have the disease until they experience irreversible vision loss.
Some risk factors for developing glaucoma include:
· Nearsightedness
· Family history of glaucoma
· History of diabetes
· History of high blood pressure
· African American, East Asian, or Latin decent
· Over 40 years of age
· Halos around lights
· Aching pain in eyes
Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.
Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.
Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.

COMPUTER VISION TESTINGComputer Users and Eyestrain
Are you one of the estimated 100 million working Americans suffering from computer eyestrain? If you or your child spend more than two hours each day in front of the computer you are likely experiencing some of the symptoms of computer vision syndrome (CVS).
These symptoms typically include headaches, dry eyes, blurred distance vision, halos, double vision and generally irritated and fatigued eyes. Working at a computer requires a great deal of eye movement and eye focusing. The constant re-focusing effort stresses the eye muscles, leading to computer related vision problems. It can impact greatly on a person’s comfort and productivity, whether they are at work, school or home.
Drs. Diane and Sharokh Kapadia are pleased to announce that we are now using a new device, the PRIO computer vision tester that will accurately determine a patient’s eyeglass prescription when using a computer.
The PRIO computer vision tester is a FDA Class One medical device and the first and only instrument designed to measure the eye’s reaction to a computer image.
Thousands of patients, now wearing PRIO-prescribed computer eyewear, have been relieved of a problem that has grown more common than carpal tunnel syndrome.
While this eyewear can also be used for reading printed material at the computer, it is not for distance viewing. It can be used in conjunction with contact lenses.
The PRIO test allows us to simulate the images a person would see on a computer screen, and determine the right eyewear prescription. This is done by exactly duplicating the light amplitude characteristics of the pixel – the tiny, bright spots of light that comprise the words and images on the screen. Bright in the center, the pixels gradually fade away at the edges to the background color. It is due to these fuzzy-edged characteristics that computer users have a difficult time staying accurately focused on the screen.
Furthermore, there are indications that the neck and back pain often associated with computer use may also be the result of eyestrain, as the body continually adjusts to allow the eyes to focus better.
According to the American Optometric Association, computer-related vision problems are a form of musculoskeletal disorder, or repetitive stress injury (RSI) caused by the refocusing effort required to bring the computer image back into focus over and over again.
A computer screen places unique demands on the eye that are substantially different from printed images. Although the computer operator intends to look at the screen, the actual place where the eye is focusing may be behind, or in front of, the monitor. By simulating an actual computer display in the our office, the PRIO system allows us to correct for this and write a prescription that will bring the eye’s focus back to the plane of the computer screen.
Prior to the exam, patients should measure the exact distance they sit from their computer screen - measuring the distance from the bridge of their nose to the computer screen - to fully duplicate the focusing demands placed on the VDT user in his or her workplace. They should also note the color of the characters on their computer and the relative angle at which they view the screen (with the computer recommended at 10 to 20 degrees below eye level).
The PRIO evaluation begins upon completion of a routine eye exam. The device, suspended from the reading rod in front of the patient’s chair, displays a back-lit panel that simulates a VDT screen. We then perform retinoscopy by shining a dim light into the patient’s eyes, through a hole in the device, to measure a response to the reading of the computer images. Both eyes are tested together and separately. Lens power is added or reduced as necessary.
The PRIO computer prescription is what makes the real difference in computer eyewear. Your constant need for refocusing will be eliminated, and with it, your computer eyestrain.
